Rating recipes

Mar 10, 2010 2:09 PM
When I search for a recipe in Campbell's Kitchen, I always look at the star rating and check out the reviews from other cooks—knowing what people think about the recipes helps us give you the tools and inspiration you need to make delicious meals for your family. Of course, we love it if you like the recipe as much as we do, but if something isn't up to par, please let us know and we'll work to make it better. So the next time you make something from campbellskitchen.com, take a minute to rate the recipe and tell us what you think: Just click on “Rate this Recipe” underneath the stars, then log in and talk to us! Any feedback you provide is appreciated and valued, and is one way of staying in touch so we can always give you the recipes and information you need for your real life.

The value of good pots & pans

Mar 8, 2010 9:39 AM
My mom sent me off to college with a few pots and pans from her cupboards, nothing fancy (she'd had the pieces for years, I'm sure, and was probably looking to upgrade!) but they did the trick in my tiny apartment kitchen. Then when I got married, I registered for new pots and pans, thinking I had to have a full blown set or I just wouldn't be able to cook “right.” Well, as it turns out, all you really need are five pieces—take a look under the Cooking Solutions tab on the homepage, then click on Cooking Basics. You'll find some pretty interesting information there, like what triple-ply cookware is and why it's so special, and what a saucier is—besides my all time favorite pot! So whether you're just starting out, buying a gift for an aspiring cook, or looking to revamp your personal set, start first with the Cooking Basic section. You'll be glad you did.

Know your knives

Mar 3, 2010 11:07 AM
Regardless of whether you're just starting out cooking or have logged many hours in front of the stove, so much kitchen work revolves around knives. And all the slicing and dicing that comes with cooking is infinitely easier when you're dealing with good, sharp knives. So if you're thinking about investing in some, start your search by taking a look at the great information in the Knife Drawer Essentials article featured on this week's homepage. You'll find everything you need to know when choosing, buying and caring for knives. One good point the article makes is that spending your money on a big set of knives isn't really necessary—two or three good ones is really all you need. And since you only need to buy a few, spend that money on quality. Good knives can last a lifetime, or at least long enough to pass on to your kids when they start setting up their first kitchens!

Picante Sauce vs. Salsa

Feb 28, 2010 5:16 PM
So have you ever wondered what the difference is between picante sauce and salsa? They don't look too different when you compare them side by side on the store shelf, but it turns out that each has its own unique qualities. Designed for cooking, picante sauce is smoother than salsa with uniform bits of tomato, onion and peppers—this smooth quality makes picante sauce perfect for enchiladas, salads or even marinating steak for the grill! Salsa, on the other hand, is chunkier with bigger pieces of vegetables—it's just the ticket for dipping chips, either on its own or as an ingredient in a more elaborate dip recipe. Either way, both picante sauce and salsa are terrific go-to ingredients for your pantry, and come in so handy whether you're making a quick snack or cooking dinner. I know my kitchen wouldn't be the same without either of them.

Get Ready to Step into Spring

Feb 24, 2010 9:14 AM
Officially, spring is still a month away, but it is in the air and I can't wait until it's here for good! Just the thought of it warms me up a little. I don't know about you, but around our house, the shift from winter to spring is a dramatic transition in the way we shop and cook. Lighter recipes, farmers markets and fresh ingredients all start to come into play again—it's the annual transformation from winter survival to spring celebration. Here at “the Kitchen,” we've been busy planning our spring calendar so you can get a jump on the change of seasons to take advantage of all the new produce making its way into stores, and in March you'll find collections featuring lemons and mushrooms. We've also got some great spring brunch ideas for you, and a whole host of inspiring chicken recipes for quick dinners. So get ready to step into spring...it really is right around the corner!

Best of the Season

Feb 22, 2010 9:02 AM
Are the kids starting to go a little stir crazy? Need a fun way to take the edge off their cabin fever? Why not get them into the kitchen to help prepare a simple dish for dinner one night? Even though my kids are pretty young and can only do simple tasks, like count potatoes and stir soup and wash carrots, they still have loads of fun and it's always entertaining to watch them concentrate on their special “jobs.” Plus, they really love the challenge as well as the accomplishment of making something on their own. If you're looking for ways to keep kids occupied until the weather starts to warm up, you'll definitely want to check out "Best of the Season" page in the recipe section of Campbell's Kitchen. There you'll find clever ways to keep kids busy while teaching them new skills in the process.

Comfort Classics

Feb 17, 2010 9:23 AM
Maybe it's the cold February weather, but lately Sundays have morphed into “Big Dinner Day” at our house, and nothing says big dinner more than comfort food. I could spend all day in the kitchen cooking some of our favorite meals because it's like a trip back in time—great memories of family get-togethers, always made better with plenty of familiar foods. Meatloaf and mashed potatoes and baked ziti are just a few of the things my mom used to make. In addition to those standards, our family has a few favorites of our own, like Cornbread Chicken Pot Pie and Wonderful Pot Roast. If you're needing a little comfort too, be sure to check out the Top 10 Comfort Classics collection on the homepage. Campbell's Kitchen is full of great ideas to help you move ahead to spring. Don't worry—warmer days are almost here!

Tell Me What You Think

Feb 15, 2010 10:05 AM
Twice a week, I get to write blogs here, and the topics can range from holiday celebrations to foods I remember as a kid and everything in between. It's fun—people who like food and cooking always like to share their food stories with each other, and there's always something to talk about! Remember a few weeks ago when I found Meyer lemons at the supermarket? I knew you might be interested in them too, so a blog that week focused on citrus fruit. But now I want to throw it out to you and hear what you have to say! Just reply to the comment box under this blog and tell me what you'd like to talk about or what you'd like to see on the site. We want to make this site as useful as possible, so your opinions are invaluable. Hope I hear from you!

Valentine's Day

Feb 10, 2010 9:20 AM
Valentine's Day couldn't have fallen on a better day this year—Sunday. Why Sunday? It means you have an opportunity to show how much you care right from the start with breakfast in bed. Campbell’s Kitchen has the inspiration you need to create a leisurely, delicious morning meal, and with so many great recipes to choose from, a fantastic menu is possible regardless of where you are on the kitchen confidence meter. This year, I'm going with the French Toast Casserole for a couple of reasons. First, the girls and I can assemble it the night before and bake it in the morning while their dad sleeps in, keeping Sunday morning busy-ness to a minimum. And second, I can add my own touch by spooning sliced bananas, blueberries, kiwi, and clementines over it, then drizzling with maple syrup—it’s an impressive presentation (but whipped cream never hurts!). What are you doing for your Valentine this year?

Slow Cookers are Like Fondue Pots

Feb 9, 2010 9:14 AM
Slow cookers are like fondue pots—growing up, every mom had one, and of course I got one (actually, two!) for a wedding gift. But, unlike fondue pots which vanished from the culinary scene and gathered dust in the back of the cupboard, slow cookers have never lost their appeal. In fact, there’s been a slow cooker resurgence going on for the last few years: thumb through cookware catalogs and you’ll find all kinds of high-end, high-tech choices. But is it any wonder? It's one appliance that fits perfectly into our busy lifestyles. Although I work, I still try to put a good meal on the table every night, and the slow cooker (yes, the one I got for my wedding!) helps make that happen; in fact, we’re having Zesty Slow-Cooker Italian Pot Roast for dinner tonight! For more slow cooker ideas, check out the Top 10 recipes on the homepage of the site—when time is hard to find, let your slow cooker give you a hand.

The Big Game Day!

Feb 3, 2010 9:29 AM
The Super Bowl is coming and in my house we're already gearing up for the all-day tailgating party in the family room. Yes, football is at the heart of the day, but food really sets the tone—it's got to be spectacular. And since this game is pretty much a guy thing, this year I drafted my husband to help tackle the menu! He was like a kid in a candy store scrolling through the recipes and collections in Campbell's Kitchen—Nachos Grande, Party Meatballs, pizzas, chilies. Narrowing down the menu was a challenge, but one thing he has to have is Buffalo Chicken Dip. It has the flavor of chicken wings without the mess! Plus, it's so easy to prepare. Find the recipe on the homepage of the site—there's even a video showing you how to make it. Try the dip this weekend and be sure to rate how your football fans liked it!

Fine Dining Night

Jan 27, 2010 8:55 AM
Growing up, my mother would sometimes announce “Fine Dining Night” for that evening's dinner. My siblings and I would quickly kick into gear, setting the table with the good dishes and silverware (always lots of forks!), making centerpieces and folding cloth napkins. Now that I'm a mom, I understand this game's ingenuity—it gave us something to do on “indoor” days when we couldn't play outside, and taught us life lessons: how to eat soup (no slurping!), pass the salt and pepper, and use a butter knife. We left the table with information that, at the time, seemed impractical but now makes perfect sense. The lessons have served me well in the real world and, consequently, Fine Dining Night happens at our house too. If your kids have a touch of cabin fever, check out the Best of the Season page on the Campbell's Kitchen site coming on Monday. There you'll find tips for keeping kids busy that, in the short term, will jazz up long winter days, but in the long term, will leave lasting impressions.

Do You Have Too Many Kitchen Knives?

Jan 25, 2010 2:48 PM
When people I meet find out that I work for Campbell's, the conversation naturally turns to food—everybody has cooking story, so words are easy to come by. After the mandatory chat about restaurants, cooking tools often becomes the hot topic, especially knives. After one such encounter, I took a look at my set of knives, then headed to the Knife Drawer Essentials section of the Cooking Basics page on the Campbell's site. There I learned a couple of valuable things: First, I have a pretty good set; nice to know. Second, I have too many! Turns out that you really only need two to four knives to get by in the kitchen. I also discovered an easy trick for making a knife easier to grip (wrap rubber bands around the handle!). Whether you're a beginner or seasoned cook, check out this department—it's updated often with information that you can use in your real-life kitchen.

The Savings Center Can Help with Your Budget

Jan 20, 2010 9:42 AM
Like a lot of families these days, my husband and I are trimming back here and there to save money, opting for more movie and game nights at home with the girls and fewer dinners out. So far, so good—household belt tightening is just a way of life these days, but we're finding plenty of ways to make adjustments. When it comes to planning budget menus, I love the 10 Recipes Under $10 collection in the Savings Center, and always make a point of checking out the Coupons & Special Offers while making my grocery lists. Before heading to the store, I can find out what's on special, then print off coupons (you'll be prompted to download a special coupon printer program—don't worry, it's safe and doesn't take very long. Make sure your printer is turned on!). Try it yourself and see just how easy saving money can be.
