Cooking on TV

Jun 6, 2007 11:42 AM
Long before The Food Network entered my consciousness, food and cooking on TV belonged to a few local programs, and to that home of Julia Child, PBS.

Today, PBS has maintained its varied and high-quality food and cooking programming with the likes of Lidia's Family Table and America's Test Kitchen, among others. My newest favourite is Diary of a Foodie brought to us by the folks at Gourmet magazine.

Like its parent publication, the focus is food, but the range goes far beyond meals to cover equipment, the cultural anthropology of cooking and food, travel, and lifestyle. It's modern and stylish, and really interesting. Yes, I'm a fan!

They're running older episodes here, and last Saturday's was called The Hungry Luddite - a quirky exploration of how technology has altered the world of food, but also how traditionalists are preserving the art and craft of Japanese knife making, heirloom fruits and vegetables, and ancient cooking techniques.

Of course there are supporting recipes too, to be found at their website:

Any time of year, it's a treat to wander through a well-stocked kitchenware store looking at all the tools and gadgets. Around the holidays and at other gift-giving occasions, I like to give gadget goodies to foodie friends as the main gift, or as a stocking stuffer or package add-on.

Some of the gadgets I've found for myself and others over the past while:
Vase grinder (Kuhn-Rikon)
I have a red one for pepper, but they're a large-capacity ceramic grinder for all sorts of things.

Shopping bag handle (Oxo Good Grips)
A more comfortable way to carry lots of plastic grocery bags, or even a heavy tote or computer case.

Silicone spatula (Trudeau)
One-piece construction so there's no place for bacteria to multiply, and good for heats up to 600° F. Everyone's getting one of these!

What gadgets to you like to give, or receive?

Music To Cook By

Music isn't a factor if I'm just dashing in to the kitchen to throw a quick meal together, but if it's an afternoon of baking or tomato sauce making, there just have to be the right tunes!

In another couple of weeks I'll be starting on carols - just the perfect thing for making Christmas cookies - but for now it's more varied. Yesterday I was making yeast dough for dinner rolls, and when I'm looking at 8 minutes of kneading ahead, it must be something with rhythm and spirit. An old Chick Corea CD, My Spanish Heart and Handel's Coronation Anthems got me going.

What about you? Do you have favourite music to accompany your cooking? * Janet
