Ahh! I really should know this, coming from an Irish family and all but I think we got a bit far from our roots and end up making a lot of American food. I'd like to try these Irish oats. The way you describe the texture it makes me think of couscous or something similar to that. -- Worries go down better with soup. ~Jewish Proverb

MommyMo, Yes the whiskey helps, but is the use of steal cut oats (known as Irish oats). Instead of rolling them they cut the oat into 2 or 3 pieces, about the size of fish tank sand. When they cook they have a different texture than what most people think of as oatmeal.

I was just wondering what makes Irish oatmeal "Irish" or different from other oatmeal and I'm guessing it's that you use oats from Ireland? Or is it the whiskey? (How did I know there'd be whiskey in this?? LOL) -- Worries go down better with soup. ~Jewish Proverb

Irish Oatmeal - Crockpot overnight

We had this at a B&B we went to over the weekend. They made it in a big batch in a 225 degree oven. I have cut it down for 2-3 servings and it works well in the crock pot. 1 cup Irish steel-cut oats 4 cups water (or half of it as apple juice) 1 medium apple - peeled, cored, and sliced 2 tablespoons honey 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup raisins 1/4 cup brown sugar 1 tablespoon half and half 2 tablespoons Irish whiskey Grease the inside of your crock pot with cooking spray. Pour all ingredients into your crock pot. Stir your ingredients together, place the lid on your crock pot, and turn the pot on low. Allow to cook for 8-9 hours overnight. Simply stir up your oatmeal and serve it in bowls.
