And Momof3, I definitely second your recommendation about the bagels and pizza - certainly there are some bad examples of those iconic local cuisines, but when they're good, they're excellent! • Janet

DJ, it sounds like a fabulous trip! I haven't been to New York for several years, but I'd love to go back. The last couple of times I was there it was on business, and the corporate travel folks booked me in to a place at Lincoln Square designed for longer stays and it was great - lots of space and amenities, a full kitchen, and non-stop service. Of course I wouldn't be able to afford to stay there on my own!

Idina Mendez was in RENT and also in that cute movie Enchanted with Amy Adams. She can really sing! -- Worries go down better with soup. ~Jewish Proverb

Hey all! I never really liked breakfast in bed for the same "crumb" reason as discussed, until one Mother's Day my husband made a very nice "bed tray" part of my present. I wouldn't relish breakfast in bed without it! Usually if we're breaking out the tray we go for a somewhat elaborate breakfast - my personal fave is eggs benedict and hash browns, but hubby loves french toast and an omlette. The unfortunate side effect is that any "occasion" that warrants breakfast in bed usually means you have an audience that would like to watch you open gifts before or during eating, so you'll usually end up with a stone-cold breakfast. I think it's always worth it though. I agree that it is VERY handy for sick people, btw. If possible I'd prefer to keep the "sickie" comfortable AND isolated from the well people in the house, and the tray helps do both. L

My daughter just went to see Wicked in NYC.. she said it was absolutely amazing. My neices good friend was the Green Witch in the play. Idena Mendez. My son is studying sound design...so I suspect in future years I will once again be seeing a lot of plays in NY. Last time we were up in NY we stayed at http://www.hotelbelleclaire.com/ The rooms were clean and updated. The cost was not outrageous either. You can get good buys for broadway tickets at TkTS too. Enjoy yourself!! Make sure you have bagels, pizza, pretzels and knishes!! Once you have them in NY..there is no going back!

My kids have made me breakfast in bed for mothers day most of their life.. Problem now is.. they make breakfast..then they fight about who is going to clean up..and I usually clean.. However.. in recent years..my youngest has made such great baked goods... but I do savior the time in bed..with the newspaper without a place to go... person to see.. just laze around!!!

DJ, The Essex House, how perfect. On the rare occasions I've stayed over it's been at the Meriden hotel at 57th and 6th almost next door to where you'll be. You'll be close to 5th ave and in walking distance of Times Square and the Broadway shows. If your three day stay includes a Wednesday, walk to Times Square in the morning and they sell all Broadway shows at 50% off for that afternoon matinee. Carol, would love to see Jersey Boys but it's always been sold out. Here's an idea. Let's all of us crash on DJ at the Essex House and go see Jersey Boys........Penny -- chopsticks are the reason the Japanese did not invent custard

DJ I'm excited for you! I've never been to New York but would love to see it at Christmastime someday. If it snowed at least once while I was there that would seal the deal. I hope you have a wonderful time and take LOADS of pictures so we can all have visited New York vicariously through you. Please include pictures of breakfast in bed. Thank you. Carol - enjoy Jersey Boys! I love seeing shows. -- Lisa

. Also I recommend eating as much pizza and deli as possible. There is something in the water that makes the bread and dough the best you will ever have. Until you have deep dish or thin crust pizza in Chicago! LOL! -- Jennifer "Every Saint Has A Past, Every Sinner Has A Future" -- Edited by 2864590 at Nov 10, 2009 9:43 AM PST

New York City is a fantastic place to be, especially around Christmas. My favorite building was the Rockefeller building. At Christmas time this will be even better! It is breath taking. Also I recommend eating as much pizza and deli as possible. There is something in the water that makes the bread and dough the best you will ever have. Rays pizza is great. I recommend just trying local hangouts you will not be upset with this decision. If you can have a certain dish at home wait till you get home to have it. When in Rome eat like the Romans do.

I'm so jealous with all this talk about breakfast in bed and New York City and Wicked. I think I'd be feeling sorry for myself if I didn't have tickets for Jersey Boys on Saturday night in Toronto. Has anyone seen Jersey Boys? This will be the third time I've seen it. -- Carol B.
