Maggie, that is a great idea! I have all of my plastic storage containers stored in a lower cupboard. This serves a few purposes. LOL. One, nothing falls out on my head while I'm searching (learned from experience), 2) easier for the kids to find storage containers AND put them away and 3) the day care kids LOVE to play with the plastic stuff. I have seriously considered dumping all of the tupperware and rubbermaid and replacing it with the ziploc or gladware containers in all the same sizes so that everything stacks together better. I hate having 4 or 5 different stacks of things. lol ~Shan

I dread opening the cupboard where we keep our plastic containers. I'm short, and it is above my head. I open the cupboard door, and all the containers & lids come falling down on my head. Even if they are put away nicely, I have to feel around for a matching lid to go with the container I have chosen, and usually cause an avalanche of both to come falling down. It really has become a nightmare for me, one of the most hated things for me to have to do in the kitchen. We also use the Gladware or the Ziploc brand. They are cheap and seem to work just fine, once they are out of the confines of the cupboard. --Linda--

Maggie, another great idea! I already use part of my garage as a pantry...I don't know why I didn't think of storing my plastics in there! Do you think they'd melt in the summer heat? My garage isn't insulated and can get pretty toasty come July! Meryl -- "The only time to eat diet food is while you're waiting for the steak to cook"-Julia Childs

That's a good idea, but I don't have the space in my kitchen for something like that. I have a decent amount of storage space, but it's prety much all full. lol -- Do not meddle in the affairs of Dragons..for you are crunchy and good with ketchup.

i keep plastic containers in a plastic container! got one of those almost clear rubbermaid boxes and i stack the containers that stack and line up the lids in their own section. since i dont have enough drawer space i just treat the box as a drawer and slide the whole thing out from the shelf to get what i want without a plastic avalanche

Tupperware replaces all broken pieces though, right? So that may be a really good deal in the end. I have a problem with lids going missing and even lots of gladware has up and ran off. I just can't seem to keep the stuff in the cabinet

I'm with you there on the lids! Even if I don't lose them, storing the plastics is a real hassle. No matter how often I clean the cupboard out, it seems those plastic containers are popping out at me every time I open the door! Does anyone have any tricks for storing these things so that they don't attack when shown the light of day? I've been seeing commercials lately for those Rubbermaid Premier containers, where the lids fit on the bottoms of the containers so they don't get lost. That's our biggest problem. lids keep disappearing, so I have a ton of containers that we can't find the lids for. I'm really hoping these will solve that problem. My plastics cupboard is WAY too disorganized. -- Do not meddle in the affairs of Dragons..for you are crunchy and good with ketchup.

About 10 years ago I hosted a Tupperware party.. It was the "first one" in the new neighborhood. I invited all my new neighbors.. I sold way over 1,000 dollars. Needless to say.. I was able to order quite a bit. I inherited some of my mothers old off white pieces.. but I ended up with a cabinet full of tupperware. Over the years the lids or the bottoms got lost.. the pieces fell and cracked... I still have the super big bowls which I love when I bake.. but other then that.. I now buy gladware or the ziplock storage containers. I don't feel as guilty when they break or get left behind somewhere.. When a bowl cost 10 dollars from Tupperware and on sale the gladware is under 2 dollars for a package of 4... I can afford to lose those pieces.. can't afford to lose the tupperware. I do prefer gladware to ziploc.. but I'm not really picky.. I buy what's on sale.. or occasionally I find the assortment pack at Costco and it ends up being under 50 cents per container... Hope this helps in your decision.

With canning and cold-packing season just around the corner, I thought this would be an interesting thread to bump up! I love ziplock bags for anything that needs stored temporarily. I also love those little snack bags (smaller than sandwich bags)! They're great for pills, snacks, thumbtacks, etc.! Oh, and those Cambro containers don't appear to be too expensive! I'll definitely have to check them out. I am all for storage containers that keep EVERY thing out! -- MM MM Good! -- Edited by 2719843 at 05/03/2007 10:03 AM

I have an odd assortment of air-tight containers - metal tins, Rubbermaid boxes, recycled jars, zip-top bags - and they all work in their own way for different purposes. My mother has a few ancient Tupperware pieces (at least 40 years old, before they came in colours), and they still do the job. No wonder the Cambro brand Meryl recommends is good - the company was founded by two brothers named Campbell! From what I read in an online search, the company started by Bill and Argyle Campbell back in 1951 now produces more than 14,000 foodservice products. This restaurant supply place carries a lot of them: http://www.instawares.com/cambro.0.62.0.0-1.htm

I've never heard of Cambro but if they are good I will look for them. I have a lot of those disposable gladware things but they don't last. I tried to get a Tupperware person to sell me some but she never actually brought the stuff I ordered! (?)

I have both the higher-priced brand name containers & containers I've bought at the 99 cent store -- that work just as well. If you buy them at the 99 cent store, check that the top fits securely. I have one I store lasagna and leftovers in to freeze/refrigerate, & smaller sizes for dips/leftovers etc. I also have the little jars with the locking lids I store macaroni (small pasta & rice) in, & a few tall glass jars for dried pasta. They look pretty on the counter top, but I have some stored in the pantry. As long as you buy jars etc with airtight (rubber rings help), you're good to go. The cookies, etc., I'd keep in the fridge.
