I have to disagree......there's no way canned carrots taste better than fresh, imo. I used to like canned green beans better than fresh but lately I find I don't like the canned ones....except for in green bean casserole. -- Jennifer "Every Saint Has A Past, Every Sinner Has A Future"

That makes me think of canned carrots and how I find the flavor of canned carrots is drastically different than frozen or fresh carrots for me. I'm really particular with carrots, I like them very soft and I find canned to be so much better tasting. I wonder what makes the difference -- maybe salt content? I've never really thought about the differences in canned foods since I really try not to eat too much canned stuff but there are some exceptions and canned carrots are mine. -- Worries go down better with soup. ~Jewish Proverb

Seems to me it depends on the "recipe" AND the "beans". If it's a soup/stew I don't rinse anything or drain. If it's a salad or casserole, I drain and or rinse. I agree with the flavor issue....depending on the bean. Not sure there's alot of flavor in canned green beans such as putting in a casserole, or soup.

I rinse the chili beans off because I don't want the flavor in the can changing the taste of what I already made. I rinse my beans because of the starch-I don't want my sauces to get thicker. I saw Paula Deen and her son Jaime discussing this very thing on Food Network while they were making chili. Paula doesn't drain or rinse her beans, but Jamie does. She thought it added extra flavor, while Jamie said there is nothing appealing about bean juice. I have to agree with Jaime on this one. I always drain and rinse my beans-that slimy juice in the can is funky-lol! -- Jennifer "Every Saint Has A Past, Every Sinner Has A Future" -- Edited by 2864590 at Oct 18, 2009 11:27 AM PDT

I don't drain pork and beans or chili beans, though, as the sauce is a big part of the flavor. -- "We get by with a little help from our friends"

Great question because I love to have my garbanzo beans with the "juice". I don't drink it or anything, but I like that it adds a little moisture because the beans can be a touch chalky at times. I do like to eat the beans by themselves which is probably why. Good to know about the starch and sodium! I'll be careful to drain them when I add to recipes. -- Worries go down better with soup. ~Jewish Proverb

Penny, The juice from the can will contain a lot of salt and starch. Depending on the brand the amount of salt and starch will very so most recipes will have you drain the beans.

I read in all recipes to drain canned beans before adding to recipes Why? It's not water your adding to your recipes just bean juice. Don't you think it would enhance the flavor....... Penny. -- chopsticks are the reason the Japanese did not invent custard
